Elías Mateo Fernández Santoro, PhD

Elías Mateo is an aerospace and biomedical engineer with a PhD in neuroscience, currently working as a Postdoctoral Associate at NYU’s Center for Neural Science. He earned his BSc in Aerospace Engineering and MSc in Biomedical Engineering, specializing in Biomechatronics, at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). During his master’s degree, he completed an internship on motor adaptation at Ben-Gurion University and conducted his master’s thesis as a collaboration between the NeuroMuscular Control (NMC) Laboratory at TU Delft and the NeuroComputing Laboratory at Erasmus Medical Center (Erasmus MC). After serving as lab coordinator of the NMC Laboratory at Delft, he began his PhD at Erasmus MC within the European Human Brain Project, where he developed computational models of the olivocerebellar system to study plasticity, modularity, and motor learning. In his current research, he studies the neural mechanisms underlying spatial navigation and decision-making using virtual-reality tasks and multi-area Neuropixels recordings in monkeys. Through his collaboration with the Mosberger lab, he continues to pursue his longstanding interest in sensorimotor integration and motor control.
